The first Benedictine monastery of Hungary was built in Pannonhalma. It was founded by Prince Géza in 996, and the building was further extended on orders of his són St Stephen. Its church was consecrated in 1001. The Monastery has be-come one of the major religious and cultural centres of Hungary. Evén though history was nőt always kind to the building and the order, Pannonhalma is still one of the most valued monuments of Hungary.
